Post Op Appointment

Alright alright, might be too graphic and you’re wondering why my knee is so wrinkly. Well I’ll have you know I’m not Benjamin Buttoning- it’s wrinkled because of bandages buttheads!

Anyway, Post Op appt went really well! We changed my bandages, answered my million and one questions and set up my first PT session! My biggest concern/question I had for the Doc was my issue with sleeping. I am so uncomfortable because it’s nearly impossible to sleep in any position BUT my back and my muscles spazzzzzz out! My muscles are dying to move around but doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon. So the Doc sent me home with a prescription for muscle relaxers. If you find yourself in a similar situation to mine– ASK for the muscle relaxers! I’m still having trouble sleeping, but hey at least it helps!

So how many pills am I popping you ask?
-Pain Meds (when needed)
-800 mgs of Ibuprofen
-Muscle Relaxers
ummm pill popper much?

I’m very much looking forward to my first PT session on Wednesday. Mainly because I’m curious to see where I’m at as far as progress. I might be over reacting but I find that my right quad is already shrinking– compared to my left quad (thunder thighs). At my post op, I was sent home with exercises to fire up my quad muscles again..

Home Exercise Program:
Quad Set when I first tried this I was shocked that I did not see any movement in my quad. I tried and tried at tried and absolutely nothing! What the heck?! I flexed my quad muscles on my left leg to compare and holy wow- looks nothing like my right! By the end of the day I was able to see some movement, however very slight. It’s been 2 days since I was given this exercise and I am able to see more muscles pop out! BOOM
Heel Slides these were a little bit easier for me since I’ve been on the CPM machine (which I’m now at 80 degrees). The higher I get, my knees start tightening up but at least I am physically able to do these exercises.
Short Arc Quad I put a towel under my knee and attempt to raise up my foot. Key word here… attempt. I see my quads twitching but sadly nothing. It’s been 2 days and still can’t lift my foot.
Straight Leg Raises alright is this a sick joke? I’m looking at my leg, brain telling my leg to lift and what do I find- no movement, NONE. This actually made me laugh a little because I’ve never experienced anything like this. I didn’t think atrophy would take into effect this quickly! It’s like I’m reborn and have to relearn how to do these things.

I do these exercises 3x a day combined with my at home arm workout for about an hour. Head back to the CPM machine then back with quad exercises. Not sure if this is realistic but I would like to lift my foot in the short arc exercises by my PT session on Wednesday. Small goals are key.

When I work out my quads I find pain/soreness below and above my knee cap. My little angel, Shelby told me to do patellar mobilization exercises to help with the stiffness and swelling. It’s a little stiff right now so I popped my trusty ole pain med to help a sista out. S/O to Shelby for being my little guardian angel and answering every stupid little question I have.

Anyway, I didn’t end up going back home to the city. I figured I’d stay at moms because I didn’t want to lug my clothes, ice machine and CPM machine to my apt in SF. Plus mom cooks for me 😉 can’t pass up that authentic filipino food. If you’re in the East Bay and want to stop by- come visit. I’m getting cabin fever and I feel like my social skills are not as strong due to the lack of human interaction. Even a FaceTime- would love to chat!

Enjoy your Sunday babes. Don’t forget to go to church!

Week 1 Post Op

Wow… It’s been a week, ONLY?! Holy shit guys, can I just say this is not fun. Yeah I’ve been warned, I’ve done my research and I knew going into this that I’d be pretty inactive for a while but I didn’t think it meant literally a WEEK of living the ultimate lazy person dream. Little did I know my neck, my back, my Netflix and my snacks were going to be the death of me.

Day 5:
-Pretty emotional day for me. Probably my weakest point of this journey thus far
-CPM machine at 70 degree flexion
-Pain meds and sleep again

Day 6:
-Woke up a little better and said to myself, “Self, you are going to get through this!”
-Continued reading, The Good Girl which is a pretty good read. I find the writing style very similar to Gone Girl. Stick around to find my full review when Im finished
-Picked up moms 5 lb and started a workout
-Gave myself a sponge bath and washed my hair in the sink… did I say by myself?
-Got a call from the doctors office to answer my questions and they told me I’m okay to shower… -_-
-Slowly transitioned away from the pain meds
-Watched OnDemand of Women Tell All, gosh is Ben such a perfect ten… I mean Ben (inset heart eyes

Day 7
-Read more of The Good Girl
– Completely off pain meds
-Had the WORST sleep I’ve had the entire week
-At this point I am really going crazy, not sure how much of this nothingness I can take
-Do my lil workout all with 5lb weight:
20 reps of sit up and press (legs straight)
30 reps of chest press laying like a dead fish)
20 skull crushers (sitting up)
20 russian twists
10 side lat raises
10 kick backs
3x through
-Dad came over and brought DragonEats I like the shrimp roll with 2 peanut sauses
-Watched the Dubs… wooo win over the Jazz
-Watched the Voice and felt inspired to do a little rendition on my SnapChat
-Since my sleep was absolutely terrible and I’m off pain meds I had dad grab some Zzzquil, let’s see if this works

As far as progression and ACL Surgery + Meniscus surgery rehab all you can do is get as comfortable as you can because you will be on bed rest for legit ONE WEEK. Do not even try to put pressure on it or get ahead of the game with PT because that meniscus needs to heal first. About day 6 I stopped with pain meds and have just been using the CPM machine and doing heel rotations and pointe and flex. Sorry my fellow cripples- that is all we can do. I did, however, discover that saying on the floor helps with your back pain.

At this point I’m just going crazy. I’m not sure how much longer I can be this lazy. Although I need to trust the process, stay positive and simply hope for the best.

Follow me on SnapChat for some entertainment!

Zzzzzzquil kickin in full force right now. night night

Day 4

Seriously how did I get so lucky? I have the most caring friends and family a girl could ever ask for. These are only a FEW of the get well care packages I have received. I have a few more bouquets back home in SF. Yes, I have my moments where I sometimes shed a tear here and there but knowing that I have a support system this strong… man, how can I even be sad?

Here’s a break down of my day/progress of Day 4:
-Woke up feeling happier, especially since the sun was out
-Finally ate real food (egg white and turkey omelette)
-Mom went to church so I felt confident on my own crutching around
Kaylee my gorgeous teammate stopped by before practice and brought me the ULTIMATE get well soon package. Seriously fellas- why haven’t you wifed her?
-Got the CPM machine to 60 degrees and pretty much had it on all day
-Watched the Dubs game… 😦
-Slid down to the floor to do abs but felt stupid so quit after 2 minutes
-Watched Inside Out, so cayooote and based out of our very own San Francisco
-Finally ate lunch for the first time (kale salad and salmon)
Leigh, my lil buddy/PIC came by after practice to hang out and catch up. Seriously we spent every weekend together and was probably going through buddy withdrawals. She also brought my a Get Well Soon care package that screamed Clarice with every item
-Elevate and ice
-Didn’t sponge bath, ew
-Meds feeling extra strong today
-Moved myself again from the couch to the bed

Today was overall a good day. A few of my besties came by and it made my heart warm knowing that nothing has changed. I am feeling stronger and I am able to bend my knee at 60 degrees which I feel is a huge progression. Just can’t wait for my post op appointment on Friday to see the battle wounds and to finally start PT and rehab. I’m ready to get off my butt and be back home in SF. It’s only day 4 but if I stay this positive– I’ll be back in no time!

night night- meds are seriously kicking in.

ACL Reconstruction and Meniscus Repair Surgery: March 3, 2016

This Thursday I went through ACL and Meniscus surgery due a dance injury. I couldn’t tell you how heart broken I was when I found out that my ACL was completely torn and if I ever wanted to dance or run again, surgery is a MUST. If you know me, you know how I am NEVER not moving. I like being busy, I thrive on being busy and being in constant motion. Running, dancing, Barry’s, TRX, you name it! You can only imagine my depression. But with the help of my caring, loving friends and family I was able to continue with strength and courage to undergo surgery.

Post-op is interesting… I have never had surgery besides my wisdom teeth nor have I ever been injured. Let’s take a look at my days so far…

DDAY/Surgery Day/Day 1:
-Arrive at 6AM, showered (ugh so early)
-Change your clothes (what? I had a specific “surgery day” outfit planned)
-Take picture (duh)
-Wake up braced, drugged, wheeled to the car then crutched into the house
CPM Machine at 30 degrees
-My nerve block wore off at about 6PM so pain meds were crucial

Day 2:
-Wow, I’m in pain. Pain meds please
-Hi Dad, thanks for taking care of me today (this is awkward I need you to lift my leg when I go to the bathroom)
-CPM Machine, this helps my flexion and I am to increase it by 10 degrees every day. I honestly feel the most comfortable in this machine. They require you use this about 6-8 hours a day but I had it on for maybe 10. I increased to 40
-Sleep, pain meds every 4 hours, more pain- double the pain meds, more sleep
-Let me try to pee on my own because it’s weird when dad takes me… SUCCESS
-Goodnight at 7PM

Day 3: TODAY
-Not too much pain, this is good
-CPM machine, slowly bringing it up to 50
Kristina brought James Patterson books and boba
Jill made chicken and kale salad
DJ EMAC came in clutch with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a Dubs teddy
Ryan brought Organic Muscle Milk, candy goodies and People Stylewatch
-Sleep, pain meds every 4 hours
-Hung out on the couch like a lazy couch potato
-PROGRESS: went to the bathroom on my own & moved from the couch to the bed!

It is now 11:45PM and I am drugged and wondering how in the hell am I even up right now to write this. Anyway, I’d like to blog about the process because it’s a good way for me to cope and to keep me sane from doing absolutely nothing  for the next couple of months.

Sound good? k cool. goodnight weirdos

I like to MOVE it MOVE it

For the past couple of months I have been exploring ClassPass and I can’t wait to share with you all my favorite studios!

Stop 1- thanks to my good friend Shawn, I was introduced to Move SF. The owner Matt is incredibly friendly and will make you feel like a part of the community. We took class with Daniel 1) he’s a cutie and 2) you’ll get a workout that really tones your bod.

What I love about Move SF is that they focus a lot on form — QUALITY over QUANTITY.

Make sure you try out Daniels class- you’ll love it!

fitfully yours,

Jane & Eggwhites

Over the long weekend, it was okay to have a little bit of cheese and carb 🙂 My roommate and I felt like indulging on Friday morning, so we walked down to Fillmore and visited Jane. Two of the same thing please!

  • egg white sandwich $8: sourdough bread, egg whites, provolone, spinach, avocado, hold the sriracha.
You can of course option for multi-grain and hold the provolone. But like I said, we indulged!
  • smoothie $7: kale, spinach, green apple, cucumber, lemon, agave
Honestly, I wasn’t too fond of this green smoothie. It was a little too tart for me- so if you like tart, have at it!

Don’t forget to take a #JaneonFilmore pic when you go too. Nothing beats this infamous table pattern.

fitfully yours,
